Coach Brooks owns the Big Ten/ACC Challenge
Wednesday night, the Hokies earned a 70-60 road victory over Wisconsin in the 2021 Big Ten/ACC Challenge behind an inspired 19-point double-double effort from junior Azana Baines off the bench.
For Brooks, it was his fifth Challenge victory in as many games and it moved his record against the conference overall at VT to 7-2.
Baines shines against the Badgers
Junior G/F Azana Baines had arguably her best game in a Hokie uniform in Madison, registering a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds. She added two blocks and a season-high 29 minutes.
Baines averages 5.8 points and 6.0 rebounds per game this season.
Traylor continues to provide consistent spark off the bench
Senior guard Kayana Traylor who is in her first yeat at VT after a solid three seasons at Purdue, has consistently turned in double figure scoring performances this season. She owns six games of 10+ points which ranks second on the team behind center Elizabeth Kitley.
Traylor averages 11.1 ppg, and shoots 46% from the floor, including an impressive 15 for 32 from beyond the arc.
She has the best assist to turnover ratio on the squad at 3.8.
Cayla King returns to the lineup
After missing the UT-Martin game at the San Juan Shootout as a precaution, Cayla King re-entered the lineup and made an immediate impact, knocking down her first shot attempt against the Badgers, a 3-pointer.
King played 37 minutes and contributed 10 points in the Hokies’ victory.
Sharing the basketball
The Hokies have done a fantastic job of finding the open player so far this season, assisting on 59% of their FGs. Tech is averaging just under 17 helpers per game with PG Georgia Amoore’s 5.4 average pacing the squad. Aisha Sheppard is next at 3.1 and both Kitley and Baines average 2.4
Kitley set to join elite group of 1,000-point scorers
Elizabeth Kitley stands 13 points shy of 1,000 for her career, a mark she hopes to reach Sunday against the Lady Vols. She is the Hokies’ leader in points, rebounds, blocks and FG% this season.
She is a preseason All-ACC athlete, was included in ESPN’s Top 25 and is on the Lisa Leslie Award Watch List, Wade Watch List and is on the Wooden Award Top 50.
Free throw struggles continue
VT has left several points on the floor in the form of missed foul shots. Tech converted 11 of 20 attempts in the win Wednesday at Wisconsin and are averaging just a 57% averaged from the charity stripe.
Traylor leads the Hokies with 16 free throws made, while Kitley owns the most attempts. Guards Sheppard and King have not missed yet this season in six and four attempts, respectively.
