HS FOOTBALL: State Championship Roundup From Dec. 17 – Midland Reporter-Telegram

ARLINGTON – Stephenville took advantage of five lost fumbles by Austin Johnson to win the Class 4A Division I state championship on Friday.

The title is Stephenville’s sixth and first since 2012.

The Yellow Jackets (16-0) jumped out to a 17-0 lead in the first quarter and had a 24-7 advantage at the half.

Stephenville’s Coy Eakin earned Offensive MVP honors with 212 all-purpose yards and four TDs. Ryder Lambert threw for 258 yards and three TDs.

Oscar Gordon threw for 372 yards and three TDs for Johnson (15-1).

GILMER 7

ARLINGTON – China Spring used some big plays on special teams and a three-touchdown game by Major Bowden to beat Gilmer in the Class 4A Division II state championship game at AT&T Stadium.

The game was tied at 7-all in the second quarter when China Spring (16-0) returned a blocked field goal 86 yards for a score to take the lead for good.

Bowden, the Offensive MVP, finished with 191 yards rushing and the three scores on 34 carries.

Gilmer (14-2) was held to 90 yards rushing.

KATY PAETOW 27

COLLEGE STATION 24, OT

ARLINGTON – Jacob Brown scored on a 2-yard run in overtime to lift Katy Paetow to a victory over College Station in the Class 5A Division I state championship at AT&T Stadium on Friday night.

Brown finished with 112 yards rushing and earned Offensive MVP honors.

The title is the first for Paetow (15-1), which opened in 2017.

The teams were tied at 21-all at the end of regulation before College Station (15-1) took the lead on a 24-yard field goal.

The 2021 UIL Football State Championships will take place Wednesday through Saturday at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.
