Carlsbad Structure Fire Contained To One House Despite Winds Greater Than 40 Mph Sunday – Carlsbad Current Argus

Carlsbad firefighters put out a house fire stoked by gusty winds Sunday afternoon, said Carlsbad Fire Chief Richard Lopez.

The Carlsbad Fire Department responded around 4:35 p.m. to the fire on the 2400 block of Hudson Street, per dispatch logs from the Regional Emergency Dispatch Center (REDA).

“The wind did not help. We contained it to one house,” Lopez said. “It was harder to control.”

Lopez did not have an immediate cause of the fire.

Wind gusts of 40 mph and greater impacted portions of Carlsbad and southern Eddy County from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday said Samantha Zuber of the National Weather Service (NWS) in Midland, Texas.

She said the Cavern City Air Terminal south of Carlsbad had a wind gust of 41 mph around 4 p.m. and a gust of 50 mph was noted at a weather station near Pine Springs, Texas near Guadalupe Mountains National Park.

Zuber said NWS did not receive any reports of damaged property in Eddy County as of Monday morning.

Eddy County Fire and Rescue (ECFR) reported two small fires Sunday. Both were contained by one fire truck, said Fire Chief Joshua Mack.

He said ECFR did not receive any reports of damage in Eddy County.

Gusty winds were not limited to Eddy County Sunday. Chaves County NWS Skywarn Coordinator Jim Tucker said the Roswell International Center recorded a wind gust of 44 mph Sunday around 9 p.m. He said no wind damage was cited in Chaves County Sunday.

Zuber said a weather disturbance over Southeast New Mexico and West Texas provided dry southerly winds Sunday.

Wind and rain predicted in Carlsbad through Tuesday, according to the NWS.

A wind advisory was in affect from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday and a red flag warning was issued Monday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. due to high winds and low humidity, fire danger was very high, read an NWS forecast.

Wind gusts of 35 to 40 mph were forecast for Carlsbad through Tuesday afternoon with a 40 percent chance of rain Monday afternoon and Monday night.

High temperatures around 60 were forecast through Wednesday and a high of 74 was predicted for Thursday, per the NWS forecast.
